In Chapter 20, Edwin and Garvey finally have the opportunity to lead a willing Cole down the path of healing. They test and antagonize him, all while judging whether or not his actions are genuine. He learns from their lessons and spends time alone to absorb them. When they leave, he is truly sorry to see them go, finally realizing that isolation is not what he wants. Cole doesn't want to be lonely, and he has determined this because of the companionship of these two giving men.
