What teachings does Scout's father, Atticus Finch, teach his children?

Atticus teaches his children to be tolerant of others, to put themselves in other people's positions (shoes), to be empathetic, honest, well mannered, and respectful. Most importantly, he teaches them by modeling those expectations at all times.
