What is Jem's reaction to the knothole plug?

Jem is upset. He feels he has lost a connection with a benevolent friend.   He has the courage to ask Mr. Radley why he filled the knothole but he does not believe Mr. Radley's response. Jem is discovering the complexity and unfairness of the world.
