Consider that Scout and Jem initially thought that Mrs. Dubose, was the meanest old woman who ever lived. (Lee 35). After being forced to interact with Mrs. Dubose, by Atticus, the children see her in a very different way.

She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that's what she did.....She was the bravest person I ever knew.
