What happened when Atticus came up for re-election? What might this mean about the town?

Atticus was never opposed in the election for state legislature. From this, we can infer that the people were happy with Atticus, and thus, no everything stayed as it was. Or..... we might infer that no one else wanted the job.

Furthermore, I couldn’t help noticing that my father had served for years in the state legislature, elected each time without opposition, innocent of the adjustments my teachers thought essential to the development of Good Citizenship.
