Are you referring to Mrs. Dubose's flowers that Jem cut? He was forced to read to her at her house. The punishment was brilliant because it wasn't really a punishment. It was a chance for Mrs. Dubose and Jem to connect and understand what it is to live "in each other's skin". Atticus meant this to be a rewarding experience for both of them.
