I don't know that I'd say Tom's injury improved his life or affected it in a positive way. Tom was a good man, a family man. He was helpful and considerate, and he took care of his family. Possibly, this refers to Tom getting into a bit of trouble as a young man and serving time in jail because he couldn't pay the fine. maybe his injury kept him from repeating this type of behavior.
