How did the Radley house get its reputation?  Was it deserved?

The Radley's were always reclusive. They didn't even attend church which was an unwritten social rule in Maycomb. Boo's trouble with the law and his subsequent imprisonment in the house, by his father and then his brother, contributed to the reputation of the house.
