In Chapter 10 why doesn't Atticus use his special talent? What does this say about his character?

In Chapter Ten, we learn that Atticus doesn't like to use his "special talent", although he does use it to kill Tim Johnson the rabid dog. Atticus doesn't like to use his gun because he feels that it gives him an advantage over other living creatures.
