How does Jem unknowingly help Mrs.Dubose "free" herself?

I suppose that by showing Mrs. Dubose respect and reading to her, Jem was able to give her the strength to die without the morphine coursing through her blood. If Jem, a child, was able to get past his anger, Mrs. Dubose could get past her addiction for awhile.
