The white prejudice keeps going even after a trial where everyone discovered the irrefutable truth of Tom's innocence. Tom, seeing no way out of a bigoted justice system, runs away from prison and is shot. Many whites in Maycomb thought it typical for a black man to try and escape justice. They are able to justify their shame and bigotry by saying this.
