If the setting were the present, what thigns would the man have had at his disposal that would have improved his survival chances?

The man would have had a different means of getting to the camp via snowmobile or helicopter. In terms of equipment, there are winter camping sleeping bags and tents. Also better clothes and gear. Really though -70 is way too cold for even modern equipment. Nobody would venture out in that kind of cold, even today.
