Why did the three men did not want to take oil along?

The men didn't want to use paraffin oil because they had once used an oil-stove on a trip and it had smoked terribly, all while permeating the air with an awful smell.

"And that oil oozed up and ruined the sunset; and as for the moonbeams, they positively reeked of paraffine."

The three friends discussed about food .Besides the things needed for breakfast george did not favour the idea of taking an oil stove .Instead he favuored a methylated spirit stove.To substantiate his point he pointed out that oil would ooze down ton the rudder filling the whole boat and everything in it on its way .Ultimately it would ooze over the river and spoil the atmosphere as everything would smell badly.
