After relating her story to Pheoby Watson, Janie realizes that her life has been an inner journey. She has seen materialism and power become the centre point of the men she has been involved with. She killed Tea Cake out of self-defense even though she loved him. Janie realizes that the discovery of her independence has made her resilient and, in the end, knows herself better than she ever has before; she feels a sense of peace.
