John sees himself as the superior mind in their marriage. As a doctor, he believes that he knows what is best for the narrator, and as a result, she doesn't recevie the things she needs and wants the most. John wants his wife to settle down in her role as wife and mother..... the narrator wants something more, and because of this, she is not happy in her role. The narrator doesn't just want to be someone's wife and someone's mother..... she craves individuality and a way to express herself.
