Alex and Carl add a perspective to the novel: a perspective that doesn't take the Wave seriously. By poking fun at the Wave, they take away some of the power it has. Alex tells Laurie that she should lighten up a little, "Laurie, you must learn that nothing is above ridicule" . Alex adds that they can start a new group and name it "The Ripple"
