what, finally, made the students realize that The Wave was just an experiment?

The students do not become aware of the fact that the Wave was truly an experiment until the rally at the end of the novel. in They've become so wrapped up in the group, in belonging, that they see the Wave as another club to join. It isn't until Mr. Ross points their leader out in the film clip.... Adolph Hitler, that they realize that none of it has truly been real.
