I recall that T.S Elliot was a student of Buddhism and Hinduism at one point in his life. The Waste Land,is supposed to be have taken from a sermon given by Buddha where he encourages his followers to give up earthly passion (symbolized by fire) and seek freedom from earthly desires and material possessions. The Waste Land question Western culture. Consider the beginning. Although new growth has covered the blood-stained fields of WW1, Elliot says the bad energy or motivations for violence still remain both bellow the earth and above it: nothing has been learned.
