My opinion stayed the same. Although O'Brien goes through so much, he is still essentially a static character. He holds the same ethical and intelligent existential crises that he felt in On Rainy River until the end of the book. The context change but O'Brien remains thoughtful, reflective, and resigned to the state of a flawed world.
