Basically Petruchio wants to mary Kate, who he thinks is supposed to be just delightful. He presents Licio the tutor (really Hortensio) as a gift to Baptista. Baptista accepts gift/bribe and welcomes Petruchio to try his luck with the abrasive Kate.
