In the first three chapters, we are introduced to Meursault's character. We learn about his mother's death, his reation or lack of reaction to her death, his interactions with other people..... and all in all, we come to get a sense of the man. In these chapters we come to learn what Meursault is like..... a detached, observant, and indifferent man, who doesn't fit in with the world around him. These opening chapters set up the novel's plot and provide us with a sort of backstory from which we can make our own inferences about the events that are unfolding before us.
