Meursault's boss is actually sympathetic to him. Meursault thinks his boss should actually be more annoyed at his taking four days off. It tells us Meursault isn't much for sentimentalism, even for himself. He estranges himself from normal human emotion preferring to think that life is full of absurdity rather than meaning.
