The children are engaged by the bachelor's story because it doesn't have a happy ending.... it's exciting, unpredictable, and realistic. The children's engagement and wide eyed wonder, as well as their aunt's complete disapproval, all adds to the humor, especially when the man points out, that unlike her, he was at least capable of keeping the kids silent for ten minutes.
