The Second Coming reflects upon WWI and the horrors of war. It speaks to the chaos, the changes that accompanied the war, the disenchantment of the people, and the advent of modernity. In the very first section, Yeats focuses on the alienation and disenchantment of the people..... the destruction of innocence, and the loss of fundamental goodness. Later in the poem, Yeats looks at the "The Second Coming" not in terms of Christ's return, but rather as impending doom. A nightmare of war and violence spurred on by modernity, which is accompanied by the loss of tradition and morality.
