How and why did they betray Thomas? Was it to do with the reason they were in the scorch in the first place?

In The Scorch Trials, Brenda and Jorge were placed in the Scorch as part of the experiments right? And it is eventually revealed to us that Brenda betrayed Thomas? How did she do this and why?
