Hester views love and happiness as unattainable. Her love is focused on her daughter...... her happiness, is also found in Pearl. Marriage was settling.... and let's face it, Hester never really experienced marraige. Chillingworth left her to fend for herself. Dimmesdale, on the other hand, allowed her to take the blame and punishment for both of them. Her trust in men had to have been a small thing...... and her love and happiness was found in the gift borne of her sin.
