Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter during what time period?

The time period in American literature is usually called Romanticism. Sometimes people use the label that characterizes men like Emerson and Thoreau which is Transcendentalism. However, both Hawthorne and Melville saw a darker picture of life and literature and so are usually called Romantic writers.
