The father is always sympathetic to the boy with his sparse language: he loves the boy. The father, however, cannot take care of the boy. The father can hardly take care of his own son. We must remember that father is not full of hope. He scarcely understands where they are going and why he is choosing to stay alive when the world is all but dead.
