What does it mean to be civilized in this book?

How does this book test the notion of civilization?

Are you referring to Cormac McCarthy's the road? I think civilization is dead in this story. Humanity is also dead. The boy is the last living remnants of goodness and civilization. The boy is a Christ-figure that has come too late to save a world that is gasping its last breath.
