This depends where in the poem you are referring to. Suddenly, a terrible storm hit and drove the ship southwards into a "rime" - a strange, icy patch of ocean. After an Albatross leads the sailors out, the Maruner kills the bird. Suddenly the wind and mist ceased, and the ship was stagnant on the ocean.
