From the text:

He had a low table by the shelves and after his bath he would sit cross- legged on it with a book on his lap. I could feel the air move when he turned a page, each one catching the lemony light slice by papery slice. I too liked to sit unfettered in a room of my own, emptied of all the past, nothing inside, nothing around, nothing but a voice bundled in paper, a pattern of marks entering my own stillness.
