In the first chapters, the author spends a lot of time describing the Price's materialistic attitudes. They are far too worried about the things they want to understand what they truly need. In addition, they are ignorant of the land and its customs.... they people and their culture. In essence, they are completely unprepared for their future in Kilanga, which foreshadows disaster for the family.
