When kino and Juana return at the end of the story, why do they walk side-by-side rather than Juana behind kino.

KIno no longer feels like a man. He feels defeated. He has lost his child and the Pearl has brought nothing but misery. Juana was right about the evil of the pearl and Kino acknowledges this.
