What is the effect of a journey taken on the protagonist?

Kitty's journey changes her immensely. Her work at the convent opens her eyes to her former selfishness, leads her to ask her husband for forgiveness, and break off her affair with Charles Townsend. Kitty also makes the decision to return to England where she reestablish her relationship with her father.
