Why does Dally not punch (hit) Johnny for what he says to him?
Johnny is Dally's favorite person. He looks out for Johnny. Dally feels like they are both orphans (Jonny's parents don't care about him) and that he must take care of Johnny. Dally sees Johnny as fragile and innocent. Dally would never his Johnny, even if he is mad at him.
