Johnny Cade has a really bad home life. His father beats him and his mother ignores him. He doesn't really have a family so the gang is the closest thing that resembles one. Johnny is also paranoid of being beaten up by the Socs. He was once beaten very badly. He is a sensitive boy as well. He has not yet become hard like Dally.
