Johnny is the unofficial "pet" of the gang. The gang knows that Johnny's parents do not care about him so the sort of adopt Johnny. Dally, in particular, feels a connection with Johnny and looks out for him.Johnny is taken care of by the gang. Pony's house is always open to Johnny. Looking after Johnny gives the gang a sense of family and cohesion.
