The Outsiders

Are they heroes?

Johnny and Ponyboy are referred to as "heroes" by the man in the ambulance. What's your own definition of a hero? Do you think the three boys prove themselves to be heroes, according to your definition? Explain and quote evidence from the text to defend your answer.

Johnny and Ponyboy's selfless act in saving the children most definitely makes them heroes. They both knew the dangers, and they each made the decision to help the children in the burning church without considering themselves. That is heroism.
