Vera is a 15-year-old girl who greets Framton and informs him of her aunt’s “great tragedy”. I don't think she is overtly cruel rather she has an edge to her personality and a wonderful imagination. She identifies Nuttel as someone who would fall for a tall-tale and proceeds to use her talents to frazzle the visitor.
