How is Santiago feeling about being chased by sharks?

This is heartbreaking for the old man. Santiago personified his sea animals giving them "good" and "bad" traits. The sharks are thieves, scavengers who have not only come to steal his marlin but dishonour the marlin as well. Santiago apologizes to the great fish for this insult and wishes the marlin were still alive.
