Why does Odysseus listen to the sirens' call?

The song of the Sirens tempts Odysseus. By lashing himself to the mast, however, he exercises self-control when he knows he would otherwise have none. In this regard, he indulges in a fantasy of temptation: he can enjoy the beauty of the Sirens' song without any attendant punishment.
