1 The Loisels are impoverished by someone they considered a friend

2 It is Madame Loisel who lost the necklace and her husband who is paying for all of it

3 The harder they work the more they have to pay off

4 Madame Loisel felt like her old life was not good enough for her and now she lost it all.

What is ironic about the Loisels’ poverty?

The irony is that Loisel was not born into a life of poverty. She was middle class until she tried to pretend she was of the upper class. Her hubris and her fantasies caused her slide into poverty.
