Mathilde should have admitted her mistake. Admitting that she lost the necklace would have enabled Madame Forrester to tell her the nacklace was a fake. Sadly, Mathilde believed that Madame Forrester would never own a "fake", and as a result, she and her husband spent years toiling to pay for something that wasn't real.
