Did Mathilde Loisel deserve the punishment she received?

I actually hate to say she deserved ten years of hard labor.... but Mathilde created her own punishment, as well as the punishment that was inflicted upon her husband for her mistakes. Had Mathilde simply put away her pride and admitted the truth, she wouldn't have spent ten years toiling to pay back debts that weren't necessary to begin with. Her story is a sad one, but the reason for the story, and the reason for the sadness was truly unnecessary.
