Did Mathilde Loisel deserve the punishment she received?

Mathilde's assumptions got her into trouble.... her refusal to admit to the truth became her punishment. Had she told her friend about the loss of the necklace, he life would have been far different. Thus, she caused her own punishment, as well as the punishment of her husband.
