In the exposition we are introduced Rainsford, a hunter and author, as well as Whitney his companion. The two are sailing on a ship in the Caribbean destined for Rio. Later, we meet Zaroff, our story's antagonist, and Ivan, his assistant, on Ship-Trap Island, the location (setting) of the story.

The resolution of the story occurs when Rainsford turns the table on Zaroff and tells him that he is the ‘beast at bay.’ Rainsford statement declares that Xaroff is now the prey rather than the hunted. In the end..... Rainsford is sleeping in Zaroff's bed.
