You need to submit your questions one at a time. I'll do the first one now. Richard Connell was an American author. The protagonist naturally has to be American. This is an escape adventure story so a perfect American hero is needed. He also needed an antagonist that was exotic and strange. Zaroff the Cossack seemed to fit the bill.
