The Most Dangerous Game is a perfect example of "escape fiction" or commercial fiction. These types of stories are really meant to entertain rather than challenge the reader to reflect on a message. The characters are, like Rainsford and Zaroff, are flat and stereotypical. The theme, feelings of animals, thin at best. The story, however, is entertaining in the context of a simple man vs man conflict with an exotic setting.
