How did the ending change the way you interpreted events in the story?

I think reality and illusion have much to do with this. All of it went through his mind in a matter of probably seconds and it turned out that none of it had happened and he was actually about to die. I wondered if this was really happening and if in fact there was still hope. Did any of it really happen?
