The Mill on the Floss

What is the reason for the hostility between Mr. Tulliver and Mr. Wakem?

I have known from the analysis that due to this hostility, Tom was so annoyed from the relationship between Maggie and Philip.

Mr. Tulliver believes that all of his troubles are caused by lawyers, particularly Mr. Wakem, and paying back all of his debts and punishing Mr. Wakem become his two obsessions after he loses everything until the moment he dies.
